FTSE's Responsible Investment Unit has played a significant role in shaping and growing the Responsible Investment (RI) market since the launch of its FTSE4Good Index Series ten years ago. FTSE has since developed a portfolio of RI indices that have been designed to enable identification of and access to stocks that meet a variety of social and environmental criteria. More recently index tools such as FTSE4Good Ratings and the FTSE CDP Carbon Strategy Index Series, provide investors with forward looking investment tools designed to identify and mitigate risk.

The flagship index in FTSE's Responsible Investment suite, this series is designed to measure the performance of companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards, and is managed by a team of CSR and RI specialists whose remit is to:
FTSE4Good ESG Ratings have been designed to objectively measure the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) risk and performance of companies worldwide. Supersector-relative ratings across six ESG themes track over 2,300 public companies, making FTSE4Good ESG Ratings a valuable tool for investors who wish to incorporate ESG factors into their investment decision making processes, or as a framework for corporate engagement and stewardship.
One of the latest areas in which FTSE has been developing its capabilities is environmental technology, helping to promote much-needed investment within this space. This index series comprises of global companies in two phases. Environmental Technology relates to those whose core business is in the development and deployment of environmental technologies, such as alternative energy, water treatment, pollution control and waste management. Environmental Opportunities refers to those companies that are beginning to adapt their business models towards a growing low carbon economy and have some involvement in environmental business activities.
Mitigating and adapting to climate change is one of the biggest challenges for the 21st century and will be a major structural driver of economic change. The FTSE CDP Carbon Strategy Index Series aims to support investors in incorporating climate change risks into their investment strategy. It features future-oriented criteria that assess the exposure of individual companies to higher future costs associated with greenhouse gas emissions. Some companies will be better placed to exploit the transition to a low carbon economy; other companies will see their value diminished if they fail to adapt.
FTSE Group was also the first global index company to sign the UN backed Principles for Responsible Investment, in 2006, an initiative launched by Kofi Annan, the UN Secretary General. This underlines the company's commitment to promoting responsible investment and providing tools for investors in this area.
